Review: Twyla Tharp From Three Sides Now
  + stars: | 2024-02-14 | by ( Siobhan Burke | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Twyla Tharp takes making dances very seriously but, at 82, she appears to be having some fun with it — and even poking fun at herself, lightly, in the process. That boisterous ballet closes a program that shows three sides of Tharp, beginning with the punchy “Ocean’s Motion” (1975) and continuing with “Brel,” an introspective new solo for the American Ballet Theater principal Herman Cornejo. (The New York City Ballet principal Daniel Ulbricht performs it on alternate nights.) While “The Ballet Master” concerns itself with the choreographer’s inner world, “Brel” zooms in on the dancer’s. Before any contemporary self-reflection, though, Tharp takes us back to where she’s been.

CNN —Anti-mining protests that have roiled Panama for the last two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday when a man allegedly shot and killed two demonstrators, according to police. For weeks, tens of thousands of protestors have vented their fury at a controversial mining contract given to Minera Panama, the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company, to extract copper, a key component in electric car batteries. Teachers march to protest the deaths of two people during a demonstration against the government's contract with Canadian mining company First Quantum and its subsidiary Minera Panama in Panama City on November 8, 2023. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Growing up on the border between Mexico and the United States, Becky G spoke English, but sang corridos, boleros and mariachi in Spanish. All her life, she dreamed of an album that would honor her family’s roots and delve into those genres that she enjoys so much. Since childhood, she had talked with her grandparents about a project "totally inspired by regional Mexican music.” She decided it was finally time to focus on that project after the death of her grandfather Miguel, to whom she dedicated the track. “This project has a lot of content that is very personal,” she said of the visuals accompanying the album. Another of her inspirations is the bolero trio Los Panchos for the song “Los Astros”.

[1/5] Prospective students tour the University of California, Berkeley campus before beginning of the new semester, in Berkeley, California, U.S., June 8, 2023. Black student enrollment across the system - which hovered at 3 or 4% for decades after the affirmative action ban - last year rose to 5%. While other campuses in the system have struggled to enroll Black students, the issue has been particularly painful at Berkeley, which under affirmative action had exceeded the system overall in enrollment of Black students. For one, factors such as economics and a school's location are no longer as useful for recruiting Black students, Ogundele said. Last fall, Black students made up 7% of UCLA's freshman class, the same as before affirmative action was banned.

I know all too well how some Americans feel about immigrants: I was undocumented for 25 years, and I am a child of immigrants who remain undocumented. I also wrote a book about the daily lives of migrants during the Trump years. At the time, the Trump administration seemed to be the worst possible administration for immigrants and their advocates. All the while, Republicans have been steadily marching toward authoritarianism, book ban by book ban and voter suppression tactic by voter suppression tactic. I was a child in Ecuador in the 1990s, a time when Latin America was reeling from the effects of decades of coups, dictatorships and political repression.
Claims that the death of a 17-year-old girl in Fullerton, California was caused by the COVID-19 vaccine are unsupported by evidence. Trinity Cornejo’s mother has publicly pointed to a fentanyl overdose being the probable cause of her death. Now that the CDC has, incredibly, added the mRNA jab to the childhood schedule; watch the body count accelerate,” reads a tweet (here). Reuters has previously debunked claims about the COVID-19 vaccine and child mortality (here) (here) (here). According to news reports citing her family, evidence so far points to a fentanyl overdose as the cause of death of Trinity Cornejo, a 17-year-old girl in Fullerton California.
